WEEK SIXTEEN

Week Sixteen (what?!) was a quiet one.

We left Zagreb on Monday morning and ended up in Bled, Slovenia. This meant a border crossing from a country not in the Schengen Area to a country that is, therefore we were expecting to be questioned about our plans and time left in the area etc but it went so smooth it was freaky. No questions were asked and we were in.

A few hours later and we drove into Bled, a town that surpassed all our expectations. We stayed at Camping Bled for 26€ which was situated at the far end of the lake so the drive in was quite magical (in the misty rain). The town was at the opposite end of the lake to the campsite and in between was the lake island.

The rain held back for the afternoon so we headed on foot to explore. From the campsite, we walked around the lake to the town before hiking up the hill to the castle that had the most amazing views over everything (entry was 10€ pp). There was a million and one people there so we would recommend getting up early to avoid the crowds. After we had walked around the castle for a bit, we headed back down in search of a boat to hire.

Just around the corner from the campsite, we rented a boat for 10€ for an hour. We (Jack) quickly discovered that rowing is actually a lot more difficult that it looks (especially when you have giraffe legs). We rowed to the island and jumped out to have a look around. There was a church and cafe and then it started to rain so we bailed.

The trip back was hilarious and wet and I rowed for a while (much to Jack’s pleasure). Once we got back to shore, the rain really started and didn’t stop all night.

On Tuesday morning we got up early and crossed into Austria. Unbeknownst to anybody, we needed to be in Vienna by Wednesday because Jack had planned a surprise visit to Australia to see one of his best mates tie the knot. We had kept the plans a secret, even from our parents.

So, while Jack had the exciting but painful task of flying across the continent and back within 6 days, celebrating a wedding and catching up with some of the family, I stayed in Europe keeping Peggy company (a trip home wouldn’t have been worth the emotional turmoil of leaving again).

Until Week Seventeen. Auf Wiedersehen x
