WEEK TWENTY TWO

When Week 22 rolled around, we didn’t realise it would be our last full week in Europe. How shockingly fast it has all come to an end. But with a whole week (plus a couple of extra days) to relive, lets get started.

On Monday morning we crossed into The Netherlands and had already decided to base ourselves at Camping Kweetal in Schelluinen. The campsite wasn’t particularly close to anything we wanted to see but it was only 10€ per night and had rave reviews. We thought we could bike and catch public transport and still have the benefits of showering each day.

Little did we know that public transport in The Netherlands is mighty expensive so our plans quickly fell in a heap on the ground. We rode to the train station one morning before finding out it would cost close to 50€ for both of us to get to Rotterdam which was about half an hour drive away. We quickly decided that was absolute BS and rode back to the campsite.

While we were in little Schelluinen, we did explore a couple of towns that could easily be reached by bike, one being Goudriaan. It was our first real taste of a Dutch town – think wind mills and canals that resembled a snakes and ladders board. Very quaint.

Instant besties.

Considering we couldn’t get far without selling a kidney, we packed up and headed to the coast but not before stopping in to check out Rotterdam. A big city with vibes similar to Cologne but not as much charm. We wandered around and grabbed some lunch before setting off to the Hook of Holland, where we free camped for the night.

The next morning we woke early and drove to The Hague, parking for free and catching the tram into the city. In hindsight, we probably could have camped here and avoided unnecessary miles.

Regardless, The Hague was super cute. Bikes everywhere, winding alleys and canals overlooked by picture perfect townhouses.

From here, we crossed the border and made our way to Antwerp in Belgium for the night. We free camped in the ginormous car park separating the river and town so were in a good spot.

We woke early the next morning and completely fell in love with this city. Having visited Belgium before, we were expecting it to be good but not THAT good. We wandered around for hours, finding hidden gems everywhere.

Just a real life statue of me.

From Antwerp we headed west to Ghent where we ended up free camping for 2 nights again by the river. The weather was up and down but we got a wander through the city before the rain really set in. Not as good as Antwerp in our opinion but very nice nonetheless.

From Ghent we went further west to Brugge. This city was the first stop on our last Euro trip and funnily enough, it was to be our last on this trip. We were so excited to go back and found (while not as charming because there were no Christmas decorations) it was exactly as we remembered.

We parked in a good spot on the ring road (for free) close to one of the entrances into the city. We walked the same streets as last time but also found new areas and the charm is everywhere.

Considering it was to be our last full day in Europe, we decided to treat ourselves. We made a beeline straight for the Grote Markt and got waffles before heading to the Duvelorium (beer cafe) in the Historium. Do yourself a favour and visit for great beer and great views. Cherry beer is the actual bomb.

After getting our cherry beer fix (several hours later) we started to wander back to the car, stopping at many chocolate shops and spending more money on said chocolate than food for the past week. Successful last day.

We are now back in London and since we are officially not living in beautiful Peggy and galavanting around the continent anymore, this will be our final weekly post. No need for tears, friends.

We will be back to let you all know the gritty details of overall costs, selling Peggy, technology and anything else we think might be useful to anyone who stumbles on this blog looking for information or inspiration.

We will be keeping the website live mainly for our own personal purposes and frequent trips down memory lane, but if we ever feel the need to document our travels again we might do just that.

Thanks to each and every person who has followed our journey – we hope your enjoyed the ride as much as we have.

Until next time. Bye x
