This dream has always centred around buying a van to use as our transport and accommodation – to live and move simply, explore the back roads and find hidden gems.
We (uhm, Jack) started scouring Gumtree months in advance, checking out the sorts of vans that were around and in our price range (max £5,000). New options popped up all the time but we couldn’t make serious enquiries until about a week prior to our arrival in London.
This is how we ended up with Peggy – a spritely 2003 Peugeot Boxer with only 56,000 miles on the clock.

We replied to the ad on Wednesday and lined up an inspection for Friday (arrived in London on Thursday). We drove through the Cotswolds (swoon) to check her out and it was an easy decision to make her ours. And the best bit – she only cost £4,000!
Anna & Joe, the now previous owners, bought her from a primary school and did the conversion themselves – she has ample storage (most under the double size bed), an additional storage cabinet with a camping gas stove, lighting, insulation and a 12V leisure battery (which we bought an inverter for so we can charge the laptop etc).
All up we’ve spent about £5,500, which includes:
- £4,000 for Peggy
- £750 for 6 months Comprehensive Insurance
- £160 to Register / Tax
- £600 to buy the essentials (thanks IKEA & Costco)
Now the real adventures begin – stay tuned.
